You’ve probably noticed several varieties of honey while at the grocery store or farmers market, and maybe that got you wondering what the differences are between clover honey, buckwheat honey, the trending Manuka honey, and other varieties.

That’s exactly what we’re going to look at today:

  • The top benefits of honey

  • What to look for when purchasing honey

  • The unique properties of 7 different types of honey

Let’s get into it!

8 Benefits Of Honey

All honey shares these common benefits:

  1. Antimicrobial. Honey contains an enzyme called glucose oxidase, which reacts with glucose and water during the honey-making process to produce hydrogen peroxide. The presence of hydrogen peroxide is where honey gets most of its antibiotic and antimicrobial properties.

  2. High in antioxidants. Honey is rich in antioxidants that help to reduce inflammation and keep our cells healthy. The type and amount of antioxidants in the honey depend on the type of flower that the bees pollinate. In general, the darker honeys are higher in antioxidants than lighter honeys. For example, buckwheat honey is 2.75x higher in antioxidants than the lighter clover honey.

  3. Soothes sore throats. The high viscosity or thickness of honey helps to provide a protective barrier to soothe sore throats, and the antimicrobial properties of honey help to prevent infection. In addition, honey contains anti-inflammatory compounds that help to ease inflammation in the throat.
